Ever since we lost our daughter about 16 months ago, my younger three have prayed for another child – daily. As they prayed for a new brother or sister (and sometimes both), they asked questions about where babies come from and how they grow inside a mommy’s tummy. I, of course, fumbled over my words and mostly gave them the blanket answer, “God created Mommy’s to carry babies in their tummy”.
DISCLOSURE: I received this product in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review. I was not given any other form of compensation.
For a while that answer sufficed – for nearly every question. At least until they learned there was another baby growing inside Mommy’s tummy. Then it was full-force, continuous questions 24/7.
“How did the baby get in your tummy?”
“What does the baby look like now?”
“When will the baby come out?”
“How will the baby come out of your tummy?”
You name it, they asked it. And rightfully so. They were simply curious about all the changes going on in mommy’s belly. But frankly, I was running out of answers and didn’t know where to turn for pictures. They wanted to see what it looked like in my belly and the internet is simply not a very safe place to find age-appropriate pictures of pregnant women and the growing baby inside.
Enter Wonderfully Made: God’s Story of Life from Conception to Birth by Danika Cooley. I was so excited when I heard about this new release and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Danika is a fellow blogger who also writes Bible curriculum. I have used several of her products in the past and have loved them, so I knew this book was going to be another great resource. I could hardly wait to get my hands on it.
Several weeks later (after it was released), my copy finally arrived in the mail. I tore open the package and read the book immediately. I was elated! This was exactly what I had been waiting for to share with my children. Over the past several weeks we have read this book at least a dozen times and the kids have looked at the pictures on their own even more.
This book has answered so many questions for my kids as well as given me some information too. While I know how conception, pregnancy and birth works, I wasn’t completely aware of all the details and when things happen. It is completely fascinating, this miracle of life growing inside me. Not only has this book answered so many questions about birth, it has also opened up doors of conversation with our oldest (almost 11). He was apprehensive when we first told him about the new baby. In fact, he was less than thrilled. However, from being the first to see baby on the tiny ultrasound machine (before even my husband) to hearing the heartbeat and spending the day with me for that appointment – he has changed. He wants to feel the baby kicking and moving. He loves seeing the pictures of the latest ultrasound and knowing what’s going on inside of me. He is also very compassionate and concerned for me as I have constant pain this go around. This book has helped him understand all the changes a mother’s body goes through and why it can be so taxing on her.
I also love how Danika shares scriptures throughout the book. She walks through each week of pregnancy and gives a description of what is physically happening in a mother’s body and in the womb and then uses scripture to show how God’s hand is in this process from the beginning. How He has known from the beginning of time what child(ren) would be born to what parents and how only He could form such a complex being. At the conclusion of the book, she shares how Jesus Christ is the true miraculous and wondrous birth. The one who came to save the world from sin and how we can be reborn, spiritually. How once we trust Jesus and accept him as our Lord and Savior, we are adopted in to God’s family, where Jesus takes our punishment for us. What a wonderful way to lead into the crucifixion and the cross! I just love it!!
This book has been such a blessing in our home that I have already ordered several more for gifts. In fact, this will likely be my new go-to gift for any pregnant mother, whether she has children already or this is her first pregnancy. It is such a beautifully written book, from a mother’s perspective, that it can be enjoyed by children for years to come. And what a great way to solidify to your children that the Creator of the universe knew them and knit them together in their mother’s belly all those years ago!
