Well, this is the last installment in my “Getting Healthy” series. It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of May!! Summer is upon us!! And I’m super excited!! Why? Because we at this house love to cook out!! That means more chicken, turkey sausage, ah-ma-zing grilled veggies (my absolute favorite) andFUN times with the family!!!!
So, how did we start our journey and get to where we are? Well, first let me say that we’re still on this journey. This is not a diet, but rather a complete lifestyle change for all of us – kids included!!
Second, let me say that this journey has taken us a lot longer than I planned, but that’s the beauty of a journey. You can take it at your own pace! One that’s good for you and your entire family. What a blessing!
So, here are a few things our family has done and some we plan to do in the coming weeks to keep us on this “Getting Healthy” journey.
**Real Foods Transition – this has been the most difficult part. My kiddos like their carbs for sure. But, I figure they’re kids only once, so a few won’t hurt them! But, overall…we’re trying to stay away from the fried-processed foods and sugars. My boys are not big on the fruit and veggies so we’re slowly working on that, but thankfully my 2yo daughter loves her fruit and veggies!! One down, Three to go! LOL One site I found (and still find) extremely helpful is this one. It gives you an 8-week breakdown of how to slowly transition to Real Foods!!
**Another way we have been transitioning our lifestyle is to only buy weekly groceries until the pantry is cleaned out. The 8-weeks to Real Foods site suggests this too. Why throw away all that food and money? Unless you have a severe food allergy you’ve just discovered, use what you have and when it’s gone, replace it with a healthier option! Economical and practical too!
**DONATE: If you’re like me, you have items in your pantry that you stocked up once upon a time. And…they’re still there. If they’re shelf stable, it’s probably safe to stay away from them! So, instead of just throwing them out, why not donate those items to a food pantry in your area?! It’s a win-win!!
**Buying Real Foods on a budget. Yes, this can be done! There are several options I’ve found in our area to help offset the increase in our grocery bill. Because, let’s face it, when you’re not buying the $1 bag of pasta to cook it’s gonna cost ya more! First…watch for those sales!!! Price-match if you can! Aldi has a GREAT price on strawberries and other fruits most weeks! I’m not always impressed with their selection, so I’ll price-match if I need to. Another option I’ve found is Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op. A friend of mine at church has done this for a while and began posting her pictures a few months back. It’s not available in all areas, but you can go online and find out if there’s one near you! It’s pretty simple. The Conventional Basket (produce only) is only $15 and man…you should see the produce that comes out of it!! Some places have add-ons for other produce too, such as Tropical, Spanish, etc. It’s run by all volunteers, so there is some volunteering on your part every so often. It’s a GREAT way to get good, quality produce at a fraction of store prices! In fact, a few weeks back my friend posted that she got 38lbs of apples for just $22.50!!!! That’s $.59 a pound! Can’t beat that with a stick, can ya?!
